Schools’ ski racing at this event is both exciting and extremely competitive. It is an open age group event in November for pupils in Years 7-13. 25 boys’ teams and 25 girls’ teams take part. The countries involved are usually Wales, Scotland and England and the country hosting the event changes each year. Each country is automatically allocated 5 team places. The remaining 10 teams depend on how many teams for each country finished in the top 10 in the previous year’s British Schools’ Finals event. England’s allocation varies each year from around nine to twelve. Teams of four skiers who have competed in the English finals are invited to take part according to their final result in the October Open Championships.
Schools book a practice session for the day before the race. On race day there is the usual bib issue, warm up session and course inspection. The girls race first in bib order, followed by the boys on run one. There is a lunch break followed by the second run in bib order. The result is calculated using the fastest 3 times on each run for each team. After the final calculations have been made there is a prize-giving and the British Champions are crowned. Trophies are awarded to the fastest 3 boys’ and girls’ teams as well as the fastest 3 individual boys and girls.
